Viva Phoenix! was commissioned by The Photographers' Gallery London (2012). It documents The Phoenix Garden in London’s Soho area, the last of the original seven Covent Garden community gardens. It has been open since 1984 and is mainly run by volunteers.
Viva Phoenix! presents a combination of informal portraits of the garden’s community, landscape photographs of the garden over a year, plus an interview with community gardener Chris Raeburn. The work celebrates the survival and flourishing of this longstanding, hidden garden, as well as the mix of horticulture, politics and aesthetics that it encapsulates. The Viva Phoenix! pamphlet was sold at the garden and the proceeds went to them. Graphic Design by Avni Patel. I continue my connection with The Phoenix Garden, including photographing their new building, and taking part in the annual Agricultural Show. |
